EXPERTS IN FAMILY LAW
A J Gordon and Co is based in the city centre of Glasgow and is a firm of family lawyers in Glasgow.

The family law firm A J Gordon and Co consists of me (Al Gordon), Karen Irvine and Graham Fordyce. Karen is our assistant and works on a part time basis. Graham is our consultant. Graham was previously Secretary of the Family Law Association of Scotland. He has a wide and varied experience of all aspects of family law, particularly in the field of financial provision on divorce

As a family law firm in Glasgow, between us we have a substantial amount of experience in family law behind us. Graham and I qualified more than 30 years ago. Karen has around 15 years’ experience but significantly, she was previously in another life a very high-end chartered accountant doing work for among others Barings Bank. Nobody knows a spreadsheet like Karen!

I have handled pretty much every aspect of family law there is. I provide advice on all areas of family law to individual clients and also to local authorities. I have represented clients in divorces involving financial provision, adoptions, permissions to relocate outside of the UK, contact and residence disputes, children’s hearing referrals, applications for specific issue orders eg applications for a passport by foster parents – and so on. For many years, I was on the list of curators (children’s representatives) for children’s hearing cases.

We tailor our fees to meet the individual circumstances of the client and we definitely do not charge the same rate across the board. We allow clients to make payment of their legal fees by monthly instalments. We will also often allow clients to pay us only when they have received their divorce settlement.

Several family law firms no longer provide legal aid. We however do: we handle most family law cases on legal aid (but not divorces where the client is likely to obtain a settlement.) We will tell you at the outset whether you’ll qualify for legal aid, and if so, whether you might have a contribution to pay and how much. We will explain to you in detail what the advantages and disadvantages are of applying for legal aid.

We will also provide you with accurate but robust advice. We see no point in clients wasting money on a lawyer if they do not have a good case and we think clients are entitled to know that as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if we think you have a good case, we will most definitely fight your corner. We also pride ourselves on providing clients with practical, robust and pragmatic advice, which often matters more than advising clients on the law. We provide a sympathetic setting for clients to talk freely, and we will also give you all the time you need to discuss your case. We will generally allow an hour for each appointment.

Very helpful. I was glad to be able to use legal aid for their top notch advice. No other divorce lawyer in Glasgow would touch me.
